Mattress Sizes Explained: From Twin to King (and What Fits Your Room)
Twin, Full, Queen, King, or Cal King — the right size depends on who's sleeping, how you sleep, and the room it goes in. Here's the simple, no-jargon breakdown.
Choosing a mattress size sounds simple until you're standing in the showroom wondering whether a Queen is really big enough for two, or if a King will even fit through your bedroom door.
The good news: there are only six standard sizes, and picking the right one comes down to three questions — who's sleeping on it, how much room you (and a partner or pets) need, and how much space your bedroom has. Let's walk through each size with exact dimensions, then match them to real rooms and sleepers.
In this guide
Every mattress size, with dimensions
Here are the six standard U.S. sizes. The bars below show each size's footprint relative to the others, so you can see the real difference at a glance.
Twin
38" × 75"Kids, bunk beds, and small guest rooms. The smallest standard size — great for one child or a tight space.
Twin XL
38" × 80"Same width as a Twin but 5" longer — ideal for taller teens, college dorms, and adjustable bases.
Full
54" × 75"Roomy for one adult, snug for two. A good pick for single sleepers who like to spread out or smaller guest rooms.
Queen
60" × 80"The most popular size in America — comfortable for couples and fits most bedrooms without dominating the room.
King
76" × 80"Maximum shared space — like two Twin XLs side by side. Perfect for couples who want room, or who share with kids or pets.
California King
72" × 84"4" narrower but 4" longer than a standard King — the choice for taller sleepers who need extra legroom.
King vs. California King trips a lot of people up. A standard King is wider (more shared space), while a Cal King is longer (more legroom for tall sleepers). If you're over 6'2", the Cal King's extra length is worth it. If you value width for sharing, go standard King.
What size fits your room
A good rule of thumb: leave at least two feet of walking space on each side and at the foot of the bed. Here's what each size realistically needs.
| Mattress size | Minimum room size | Comfortable room size |
|---|---|---|
| Twin / Twin XL | 7' × 10' | 8' × 10' |
| Full | 9' × 10' | 10' × 11' |
| Queen | 10' × 11' | 10' × 12' |
| King / Cal King | 12' × 12' | 13' × 13' |
Measure your doorways, stairs, and hallways — not just the bedroom. Kings and Cal Kings especially can be tricky to maneuver through tight turns. With our white-glove delivery, our team handles all of that for you and sets it up in the room, so you never have to worry about the squeeze.
How to choose the right size
Boil it down to these three questions:
Who's sleeping on it? One adult is comfortable on a Full and luxurious on a Queen. Two adults should start at a Queen and go up to a King if either of you moves a lot at night, or if kids and pets join in.
How tall are you? Standard sizes are 75–80" long. If you're over 6'2", look at Twin XL, King, or California King for the extra length so your feet aren't hanging off.
How much room do you have? Use the table above. A bed that's too big makes a room feel cramped and hard to move around; the right size leaves comfortable walking space.
