When Should You Replace Your Mattress? 7 Signs It's Time

If you're waking up stiff, sleeping better in hotel beds, or can't remember when you bought it — your mattress may be the problem. Here's how to know for sure.

Most people keep their mattress years longer than they should — usually because the decline is so gradual they never notice it. But a worn-out mattress quietly steals your sleep, your energy, and often your back's good mornings.

After 20+ years helping folks across Magnolia, Montgomery, and Huntsville find better sleep, we've learned that the question isn't really "how old is too old." It's whether your mattress is still doing its job. Below are the seven clearest signs it's time, roughly how long each type of mattress should last, and a few proven replacements our customers love.

The 7 signs it's time to replace your mattress

You rarely need all seven. If two or three of these sound familiar, your mattress is already costing you sleep.

1

You wake up sore or stiff

Especially in your lower back, hips, or shoulders — and the ache eases as the day goes on. That's a support problem, not an age problem.

2

You sleep better away from home

If a hotel or a guest bed leaves you more rested than your own, your mattress is the variable.

3

You can see or feel sagging

Visible dips, a "roll-together" valley in the middle, or body impressions deeper than an inch and a half mean the support layers are done.

4

It's noisy or you feel every move

Squeaky coils or feeling your partner's every turn point to worn springs and lost motion isolation.

5

Allergies or asthma have worsened

Old mattresses accumulate dust mites and allergens. Waking congested can be a mattress signal.

6

You sleep hot now when you didn't

As foams break down they trap more heat. If you've started waking up sweaty, the materials are aging.

7

You genuinely can't remember buying it

If you have to think hard about when you got it, it's very likely past its prime. Most mattresses are ready for replacement around the 7–10 year mark.

How long each mattress type lasts

Lifespan depends heavily on the materials and how well the mattress was built. Here's what to realistically expect from a quality mattress that's been properly supported by a solid foundation or adjustable base.

Mattress type Typical lifespan What wears out first
Innerspring 6–8 years Coils lose tension; comfort layers thin out
Memory foam 8–10 years Foam softens and body impressions set in
Hybrid 8–10 years Comfort foams before the coil system
Latex 10–15 years Very durable; cover and comfort layer first
Good to know

A great mattress on a worn-out foundation ages fast. If your box spring sags or your slats are more than a few inches apart, even a brand-new mattress won't feel right — and its warranty may be voided. When you replace the mattress, have someone check the base too. We do this for free with every white-glove delivery.

The one-night test that settles it

Not sure if it's really the mattress? Try this. Sleep one night somewhere else — a hotel, a guest room, even a quality mattress in our showroom. If you wake up noticeably better rested and less achy, you have your answer. Your body is the most honest reviewer there is.

And if you're on the fence about firmness or feel, that's exactly what an in-person visit solves. Lying on a mattress for ten minutes tells you more than a hundred online reviews.

Common questions

Can I just add a mattress topper instead?
A topper can buy you a little time if your mattress is only slightly too firm, but it can't fix a support problem. If your mattress is sagging or you wake up sore, a topper just puts a cushion over a broken foundation — the support issue is still there.
Does flipping or rotating extend the life?
Rotating head-to-foot every few months helps most modern mattresses wear evenly. Very few today are true flip mattresses, though — most are one-sided, so flipping isn't recommended unless the maker specifically says so.
What should I do with my old mattress?
We haul it away and recycle it responsibly at no charge with every purchase — you won't have to wrestle it to the curb. Keeping old mattresses out of landfills is something we care about.
How do I make my new mattress last as long as possible?
Use a supportive foundation or adjustable base, rotate it a few times a year, use a breathable protector, and avoid sitting on the same edge every day. Good support underneath is the single biggest factor in longevity.
