What Is the Science Behind Personalized Mattress Support?
The Sleep Science Project is Texan Mattress's consumer-education framework for explaining how mattress technologies differ. We are a mattress retailer and educator, not a sleep laboratory, medical provider or biomechanics research institution. We do not claim that our Mattress Finder diagnoses pain, treats sleep disorders or clinically validates a mattress for an individual.
The Six Mattress Factors That Matter Most

Firmness Is Not the Same as Support
A soft mattress can still have a strong support system, and a firm mattress can still be a poor fit for a particular sleeper. Firmness describes feel; support describes how the mattress and its underlying system respond to load. That distinction is why a universal “firm mattresses are healthier” rule is not useful.
For side sleepers, enough surface cushioning can help avoid uncomfortable concentration around the shoulder and hip. Back and stomach sleepers often compare how easily the midsection stays supported without excessive sink. These are shopping observations—not prescriptions for treating back, shoulder or hip pain.
What Does Zoned Support Mean?
Zoned support means different areas of a mattress are engineered to respond with different resistance or reinforcement. That can be done through coil geometry, foam cuts, latex patterns or added materials. A zoned design is not automatically better; its usefulness depends on the exact design, sleeper size and where the zones meet the body.
How Should You Think About Cooling Technology?
“Cooling” can refer to several different strategies: a cover that feels cool initially, phase-change materials, more breathable foams, latex, ventilated layers or airflow through a coil unit. These technologies can change heat transfer and airflow, but room temperature, sheets, comforters, mattress protectors and individual physiology also affect how warm a bed feels.
Memory Foam and NASA: What Is Actually True?
The memory-foam category has roots in NASA-contracted temper-foam research from the late 1960s, originally developed for improved cushioning and impact protection. That history does not mean every modern memory foam—or every proprietary mattress foam—is itself “NASA-developed.” Modern manufacturers formulate their own materials and constructions.
This distinction matters because “NASA technology” is often used as a marketing shortcut. The useful question for a mattress shopper is how the specific foam behaves: contouring, recovery speed, heat retention, density, layering and how it works with the rest of the mattress.

Identify sleep position, preferred feel, body size, temperature preference, mobility and partner needs.
Foam, hybrid, latex and traditional coil systems create different combinations of contouring and responsiveness.
We distinguish measurable product construction from marketing phrases such as “ultimate support” or “best cooling.”
For organic or material certifications, we note whether the claim applies to a component or the finished mattress.
When a model is available in the showroom, side-by-side testing can reveal differences that specifications alone cannot predict. Call ahead for exact model availability.
Trial, warranty, delivery and financing terms are checked separately from mattress construction because retailer and manufacturer-direct policies can differ.
How to Evaluate a “Sleep Science” Mattress Resource
A useful mattress-science resource should clearly separate measurable construction, manufacturer claims, third-party certifications, retailer observations and medical evidence. Be cautious with pages that promise exact percentages of pressure relief, guaranteed spinal alignment, improved circulation, allergy treatment or a fixed number of extra years of mattress life without showing credible evidence for the exact product and claim.
That is why this page no longer uses the old unsupported claims that certain mattresses reduce pressure by 40–80%, reduce motion by 90%, improve circulation or automatically create a “healthier” sleep environment.

No. The Mattress Finder is a shopping tool that organizes your stated preferences and points you toward current products worth comparing. It is not a validated medical questionnaire, sleep study or diagnostic test. Use the recommendation as a starting point, then compare product details and, when practical, test the feel in person.

What is the science behind personalized mattress support?
It is the practical matching of mattress feel, support structure, pressure response, temperature characteristics and movement behavior to a sleeper's preferences, body size, sleep position and partner needs. It should not be presented as a medical diagnosis.
Is a firmer mattress always more supportive?
No. Firmness is the surface feel; support is how the full construction responds to load. A soft and firm mattress can both use substantial support systems.
Does memory foam really come from NASA?
